strangle
Kill by neck
To strangle is to kill or injure by compressing the throat, cutting off air or blood flow.
The word extends to anything that suppresses or inhibits: Regulations are strangling small businesses.
A stranglehold is a grip around the neck, or figuratively, oppressive control: The corporation had a stranglehold on the market.
