supremacy clause
Hierarchy establishing rule
The supremacy clause is the provision in Article VI of the U.S.
Constitution establishing that federal law takes precedence over state law when the two conflict.
It makes the Constitution, federal statutes, and treaties "the supreme Law of the Land," binding on state judges regardless of contrary state provisions: The court struck down the regulation under the supremacy clause.
