First Amendment
Constitutional speech guarantee
The First Amendment is the opening provision of the U.S.
Bill of Rights, protecting freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
In popular usage, it's often invoked broadly to defend expression from any criticism: It's my First Amendment right to say what I want.
Strictly, it restricts only government censorship, not private consequences.
