black-figure
Incised dark forms
Black-figure is a style of ancient Greek pottery decoration in which figures are painted in black slip on red clay, with details incised to reveal the clay beneath.
The technique dominated from roughly the 7th to 5th centuries BCE, before being supplanted by the reverse red-figure style.
The museum's collection includes several black-figure amphorae depicting scenes from the Iliad.
