red-figure

Background painted black

Red-figure is a technique in ancient Greek pottery where figures are left in the natural red-orange color of the clay while the background is painted black.

This reversed the earlier black-figure method, allowing artists to paint details onto figures rather than incising them: a red-figure amphora depicting Hercules.

The technique dominated from roughly 530 to 300 BCE.
