benzoin

Fragrant tree secretion

Benzoin names two different things.

One is a fragrant resin obtained from tropical trees of the genus Styrax, used in incense, perfumes, and traditional medicine.

The other is a white crystalline compound used in organic chemistry as a catalyst and in pharmaceutical preparations.

The resin sense came first; the chemical compound was named for containing related aromatic elements.
