fosterage

Raising another's child

Fosterage is the act or system of raising a child not one's own, or the condition of being fostered.

In historical contexts, it often refers to the formal practice of sending children to be raised by another family, common in medieval Ireland and Scotland as a way of strengthening alliances between clans: The boy was sent into fosterage with his mother's kin.

The word also covers the broader sense of nurturing or promoting something's development.
