contact metamorphism

Magma-induced rock alteration

Contact metamorphism is the transformation of rock by heat from nearby molten magma or lava.

Unlike regional metamorphism, which occurs over vast areas under tectonic pressure, contact metamorphism affects a limited zone around the intrusion: The limestone showed contact metamorphism where the granite had intruded.

The affected area is called a contact aureole.
