flag officer
Fleet command rank
A flag officer is a naval officer of high rank—admiral, vice admiral, rear admiral, or commodore—entitled to fly a personal flag indicating their presence aboard a vessel.
The term distinguishes these senior commanders from lower-ranking officers.
By extension, flag officer sometimes applies to equivalent ranks in other military branches: generals in the army, air force, or marines.
