firebreak

Blaze-stopping gap

A firebreak is a gap in vegetation or other combustible material, cleared or maintained to stop or slow the spread of fire.

Firebreaks may be natural features like rivers or rocky ridges, or deliberately created strips of bare earth: The crew cut a firebreak around the perimeter.

The term extends figuratively to anything designed to prevent problems from spreading.
