fireline

Cleared combustion boundary

A fireline is a strip of land cleared of vegetation to stop the spread of wildfire.

Firefighters create firelines by cutting, scraping, or burning away fuel so flames have nothing to consume when they reach the barrier.

The term also refers to the active front where firefighters directly engage a blaze: Crews worked the fireline through the night.
