fall equinox

Autumn's day-night equilibrium

The fall equinox is one of two moments each year when the sun crosses the celestial equator, making day and night approximately equal in length.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurs around September 22 and marks the astronomical beginning of autumn.

The Southern Hemisphere's fall equinox happens around March 20.

Also called the autumnal equinox.
