scarecrow

Stuffed crop guardian

A scarecrow is a humanlike figure set up in fields to frighten birds away from crops, typically made of old clothes stuffed with straw and mounted on a pole.

The word extends to anyone dressed in ragged clothing or looking disheveled: He looked like a scarecrow in that old coat.

Scarecrows appear frequently in folklore and fiction as figures that come to life.
