artistic license
Liberties with truth
Artistic license is the freedom creators take to deviate from fact, convention, or strict accuracy for effect.
A filmmaker might compress timelines or invent characters; a painter might alter proportions for emotional impact.
The term often appears when someone questions accuracy: That's not how it happened—the author took some artistic license.
Sometimes invoked to excuse sloppiness rather than justify deliberate choice.
