poetic license

Creative rule-bending

Poetic license is the freedom to depart from facts, conventional rules, or literal accuracy for artistic effect.

A poet might bend grammar, a novelist might compress historical timelines, a songwriter might rhyme words that don't quite match.

The term extends beyond poetry to any creative liberties: The film takes some poetic license with the events.

Sometimes used to excuse inaccuracies: That's not what happened, but we'll call it poetic license.
