cross-examination

Opposing counsel's questioning

Cross-examination is the questioning of a witness by the opposing side in a legal proceeding, typically after that witness has already testified.

The purpose is to test the accuracy, credibility, or completeness of earlier testimony, often by probing for inconsistencies or bias.

Lawyers conducting cross-examination may ask leading questions that suggest their own answers.

Outside the courtroom, cross-examination describes any intense or adversarial questioning: My mother's cross-examination about where I'd been lasted twenty minutes.

The verb cross-examine and the informal shortening cross-exam are also common.
