emeries
Coarse polishing substances
Emeries is the plural of emery, a coarse granular mineral used as an abrasive.
Emery appears most often in compounds: an emery board files fingernails, emery cloth or emery paper smooths metal or wood.
The mineral itself is rarely encountered outside industrial contexts, but emery boards are household items.
