emergency brakes
Last-resort deceleration
Emergency brakes are backup braking systems in vehicles, designed to stop or hold a car when the main brakes fail or when parked.
Also called the parking brake or handbrake, it typically operates mechanically via cable rather than hydraulically: Pull the emergency brake before you get out.
The term extends to similar fail-safe stopping mechanisms on trains and elevators.
