emergency brake

Handbrake, panic lever

An emergency brake is a backup braking system in a vehicle, separate from the main hydraulic brakes.

Also called a parking brake or handbrake, it's typically used to keep a parked car stationary, especially on hills: Don't forget to set the emergency brake.

The name reflects its original purpose as a failsafe if primary brakes fail, though that use is now rare.
