emancipationists

Anti-slavery activists

Emancipationists were advocates for ending slavery, particularly in the United States and British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The term distinguished those who actively campaigned for abolition from passive opponents of slavery: The emancipationists organized petition drives and public lectures.

Now largely historical, replaced by the more common *abolitionists*.
