slaveholders

Masters of bondspeople

Slaveholders are people who legally own other human beings as property.

The term appears most often in discussions of the antebellum American South, where slaveholders formed a powerful planter class: Many of the Founding Fathers were slaveholders.

The word carries historical weight—it names the relationship plainly rather than softening it.
