shock therapy

Brain current treatment

Shock therapy refers to two distinct practices.

In medicine, it means electroconvulsive therapy—applying electrical current to the brain to treat severe depression or other mental disorders.

In economics, shock therapy is the abrupt implementation of drastic reforms, typically rapid privatization and deregulation to transition from a planned to a market economy: Russia underwent shock therapy in the 1990s.

Both senses share the idea of sudden, dramatic intervention rather than gradual change.
