earned run average

Mound performance metric

Earned run average is a baseball statistic measuring the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched.

Abbreviated ERA, it excludes runs scored due to fielding errors.

A lower ERA indicates better pitching performance: His ERA dropped below 3.00 this season.

The stat has been standard since the early twentieth century.
