starting pitcher
First mound assignment
A starting pitcher is the pitcher who begins a baseball game, as opposed to relief pitchers who enter later.
Starters typically pitch five to seven innings and are expected to go deeper into games than relievers.
A team's rotation usually consists of four or five starting pitchers who take turns: He's our best starting pitcher.
