strikeout

Three swings, out

A strikeout in baseball is when a batter accumulates three strikes and is out.

The term extends to any decisive failure: The product launch was a strikeout.

As a verb phrase, to strike out means to fail completely or, in dating, to be rejected: I struck out with her at the party.

Also spelled strike-out or strike out.
