master cylinder

Hydraulic pressure source

A master cylinder is the hydraulic pump in a vehicle's braking system that converts the pressure from the brake pedal into hydraulic force.

When you press the pedal, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through lines to the wheel cylinders or calipers, which apply the brakes.

A failing master cylinder causes a spongy pedal or brake failure: The mechanic said my master cylinder was leaking.
