One Thousand and One Nights
Scheherazade's story collection
One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian folk tales compiled over centuries, also known as the Arabian Nights.
The frame story follows Scheherazade, who postpones her execution by telling her husband the king a new tale each night, leaving him in suspense until the next.
The collection includes famous stories like Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and Sinbad the Sailor.
The title has become shorthand for exotic, labyrinthine storytelling: The investigation unfolded like something out of One Thousand and One Nights.
