syllabary

Script of sounds

A syllabary is a writing system where each character represents a syllable rather than an individual sound.

Japanese hiragana and katakana are syllabaries—each symbol stands for a consonant-vowel combination like "ka" or "mi." This contrasts with alphabets, where characters represent single sounds, and with logographic systems like Chinese, where characters represent whole words or concepts.
