deckle

Papermaking frame part

A deckle is the frame used in traditional papermaking that fits over the mold and determines the size of the sheet, keeping the pulp contained while water drains.

The rough, feathery edge that forms where pulp seeps under this frame is called a deckle edge.

Books with deckle edges have pages that are intentionally left untrimmed, giving them an artisanal or old-fashioned appearance.

The novel came in a beautiful hardcover with deckle edges.
