watermarks

Embedded paper patterns

Watermarks are faint designs or patterns embedded in paper, visible when held to light, originally used to identify the papermaker and now commonly seen in currency to prevent counterfeiting.

Digital watermarks are invisible codes embedded in images, audio, or video to track ownership or detect unauthorized copying: The stock photo still had watermarks on it.

To watermark something is to apply such a mark.
