daikon

Long white radish

Daikon is a large white radish common in East Asian cuisines, milder and less peppery than the small red radishes familiar to Western cooks.

It can grow over a foot long and several inches thick.

Daikon is eaten raw, pickled, or cooked in soups and stir-fries.

The ramen came with sliced daikon and a soft-boiled egg.

In Japanese, the word simply means "big root."
