hailstone

Frozen storm pellet

A hailstone is a pellet of ice that falls during a hailstorm.

Hailstones form when updrafts in thunderclouds carry raindrops into freezing air, where they accumulate layers of ice before falling.

They range from pea-sized to golf-ball-sized or larger—large ones can damage crops, vehicles, and roofs.
