sensitize

Heighten someone's awareness

To sensitize is to make sensitive or responsive to something.

In photography and medicine, it means making a surface or organism reactive to light, chemicals, or allergens: The film must be sensitized before exposure.

More broadly, to sensitize people is to make them aware of and responsive to an issue: The documentary sensitized viewers to the plight of refugees.

The opposite is desensitize.
