Morse

Dots and dashes

Morse typically appears in Morse code, the communication system using dots and dashes to represent letters, invented by Samuel Morse in the 1830s.

The pattern of short and long signals allowed messages to be transmitted over telegraph wires and later by radio: The ship sent an SOS in Morse.

Morse is also a surname, most famously borne by the inventor himself. (Lowercase morse is an archaic term for a clasp.)
