carbon buildup
Combustion residue accumulation
Carbon buildup is the accumulation of carbon deposits inside an engine or other combustion system.
Fuel and oil leave residues that carbonize under heat, coating valves, pistons, and spark plugs.
Excessive buildup reduces efficiency and performance: The mechanic said carbon buildup was causing the rough idle.
Also called carbon deposits or coking.
