crosscuts

Cuts across grain

Crosscuts are cuts made across the grain of wood, perpendicular to the fibers—the opposite of ripping, which follows the grain.

A crosscut saw has teeth designed for this purpose.

The term extends to any diagonal or transverse cut.

In film, crosscutting alternates between scenes happening simultaneously: The director crosscuts between the chase and the ticking bomb.
