lost continent

Vanished ancient homeland

A lost continent is a landmass believed to have existed in ancient times but since vanished—typically sunk beneath the ocean.

Atlantis and Lemuria are the most famous examples, featuring in myth, pseudoscience, and fiction.

The term sometimes appears in geology for actual ancient landmasses now submerged or broken apart: Scientists discovered evidence of a lost continent beneath the Indian Ocean.
