continentals

Worthless colonial money

Continentals are soldiers of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, distinguished from militia by their regular enlistment and training.

The term also refers to paper currency issued by the Continental Congress, which depreciated so severely that not worth a continental became an expression for worthlessness.

The singular continental describes things relating to a continent or, capitalized, to the American colonies during the Revolution.
