intron
Excised gene segment
An intron is a segment of a gene that does not code for protein.
When DNA is transcribed into RNA, introns are cut out and discarded before the RNA is translated into protein.
Most human genes contain multiple introns, which can be far longer than the protein-coding segments (exons) they interrupt.
The mutation occurred in an intron and had no effect on the protein.
