codons

RNA reading frames

Codons are sequences of three nucleotides in DNA or RNA that specify which amino acid gets added during protein synthesis.

Each codon corresponds to one of twenty amino acids or signals the process to stop.

The genetic code—the mapping of codons to amino acids—is nearly universal across all life forms: The codon AUG codes for methionine and also signals where translation begins.
