coalmines
Subterranean fuel quarries
Coalmines are underground excavations where coal is extracted.
The word is usually written as two words (coal mines) or hyphenated (coal-mines), but the solid form appears in older texts and British usage.
The coalmines employed thousands of workers in the region.
