national parks
Government-preserved lands
National parks are areas of land protected by government to preserve natural landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems for public enjoyment.
They typically feature scenic wilderness—mountains, forests, canyons, coastlines—and restrict commercial development.
In the United States, the National Park Service manages these lands: We spent a week hiking in the national parks of Utah.
Many countries maintain similar systems.
