pitman
Underground coal worker
A pitman is a worker in a coal mine or other pit—someone who labors underground.
The term is largely historical, from when mining was more labor-intensive.
In mechanical contexts, a pitman is a connecting rod that converts rotary motion to reciprocal motion, as in a pitman arm steering system.
Plural: pitmans or pitmen.
