C-clef

Violist's staff marker

A C-clef is a musical symbol that marks middle C on a staff line.

Unlike the fixed treble and bass clefs, it moves to different positions: placed on the middle line it becomes an alto clef (used for viola), on the fourth line a tenor clef (used for cello, bassoon, and trombone in higher registers).

The symbol resembles two reversed C's or a decorated bracket pointing to the C line.
