accidentals

Sharps and flats

Accidentals are the sharps, flats, and naturals that appear in musical notation to raise or lower a note's pitch outside the key signature.

They apply only within the measure where they appear: The accidentals in that passage make it tricky to sight-read.

In a looser sense, accidentals are incidental items or minor additions to something larger.
