key signatures
Musical tonality indicators
Key signatures are the clusters of sharps or flats appearing at the beginning of each staff in written music, indicating which notes should be raised or lowered throughout a piece.
They establish the tonal center or key, saving composers and performers from marking every altered note individually.
A piece in G major has one sharp (F#) in its key signature; a piece in B-flat major has two flats.
Musicians memorize key signatures through patterns like the circle of fifths.
The three flats in the key signature told me we were in E-flat major.
