breaking up
Dissolving a relationship
Breaking up most commonly refers to ending a romantic relationship: We're breaking up after three years together.
It also describes something coming apart into pieces or fragments, whether physical (The ice is breaking up on the river) or organizational (The company is breaking up into smaller divisions).
In communication contexts, breaking up means a signal is becoming unclear or intermittent: You're breaking up—I can barely hear you.
The phrase can also mean dissolving into laughter: The audience was breaking up at his jokes.
