chthonian
Of infernal realms
Chthonian describes things dwelling in or relating to the underworld—the realm beneath the earth's surface associated with death and the dead.
In Greek religion, chthonian deities like Hades and Persephone received offerings poured into the ground rather than burned upward.
The word extends to anything dark, subterranean, or primordially earthbound: chthonian forces, chthonian depths.
Also spelled chthonic.
