chiles

Fiery cooking peppers

Chiles are hot peppers of the genus Capsicum, used fresh or dried in cooking worldwide.

The spelling chile (from Spanish) is standard in the American Southwest and Mexico, while chili dominates elsewhere in American English.

Chiles range from mild to extremely hot, measured on the Scoville scale: Habanero chiles are among the hottest varieties. (Capitalized Chile is the South American country.)
