chess pieces

Rooks and knights

Chess pieces are the game tokens used in chess, with each player controlling sixteen: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.

Each type moves according to specific rules, and the pieces are distinguished by color—traditionally white and black—to identify which player controls them.

Beyond the game itself, chess pieces appear in figurative language: someone might be described as a pawn in someone else's game to suggest they're being manipulated by more powerful players.
